INSPIRATION: LISA BONET

Lisa Bonet!!!!! On the Cosby show Lisa Bonet played the middle sister Denise in the family. Her effortless style incorporated over-sized silhouettes and bohemian accessories as well as traditional African fabrics. Denise was the archetype New York Hippie Chic.
At Kokorokoko she has always been one of our main inspirations--she represents the downtown style of 1980s New York. During the show she mentions going to Soho with her friends or visiting the Village for a poetry reading.
Later in the 90s she starred in A Different World where her personal style continued to evolve. Check out some sick outfits we put together below inspired by Lisa Bonet AKA Denise Huxtable!

GITANO

Long before Gitano was a K-Mart brand, they were one of the hottest denim and casual wear brands of the 80s and early 90s. Catering to the designer jeans craze of that time, Gitano had a wide range of ultra tailored denim in a variety of washes-- as well as contemporary sportswear for men, women and children.

Shania Twain was famously featured in a Gitano Jeans ad in 1994 when it sponsored her "Perfect Fit" tour. That same year, Gitano was sold to Fruit of the Loom after years of financial distress. Gitano is best remembered as an affordable, classic and durable brand.

We love Gitano because it is made with quality materials and has a structured look. Outfit yourself in head-to-toe Gitano for a look that is perfectly 1991, or wear as separates for a low-key americana vibe. Check out some of the choice Gitano pieces we have at the shop right now below!

Patrick Nagel

Patrick Nagel's art, infamous for gracing nail salons across the globe, was a luxury loft staple for all cocaine culture gents and babes of the 80s. Nagel reached a wide audience regularly illustrating Payboy, but perhaps is best known image for the cover of Duran Duran's album, Rio. Although he used photographs of models and Playboy Playmates during the creation of his iconic images, the resulting illustrated women are strikingly similar. Who is this reappearing form, who is Nagel's anima?

Nagel died from a heart attack in the mid-1980s directly after an appearance at the American Heart Association's Aerobathon. The aesthetic of his pieces has endured for decades and his work is some of the most recognizable art in history!

Stop by our store for rare framed Nagel posters in a range of mysterious poses!

LIZ CLAIBORNE

Liz Claiborne was a fashion icon and clothing designer from the 70s through the 90s best known for her moderately priced women's sportswear separates. She was the first woman to be honored in the Fortune 500 list, having sold over a billion under her Liz Claiborne clothing line. She was also the first to suggest that department stores give her collections their own department so people could shop it as a whole.

Liz Claiborne is remembered by her iconic large oval glasses and short hair-- sophisticated and powerful. Her collections mirrored the feminist power politics of the 1980s with large shoulder pads, menswear and bold colors and prints.

Check out some cool Liz Claiborne pieces we have at the shop below! This is a brand we are always stocking, so keep an eye out on our Instagram!!
