Inspired by POPPLES!

Growing up, I remember seeing Popples and thinking how cute they were! These small, brightly colored teddy bears turned into balls when you fold them up! They even had cute names like Potato Chip, Pancake and Puzzle. Very similar to Care Bears, but maybe a little crazier! So, in the spirit of Easter, we put together a few outfits inspired by the season and of these cuddly 80s treasures. :)

In the 90s, every teen girl was waiting for the mailman to drop of her new dELiA*s catalog so she could flip through each page for hours on end-- putting hearts around all the stuff she wanted! I always remember the models being like cool tomboy raver chicks with an attitude. Iconic brands like Buggirl, Tasty and Route66 were mixed and matched with silver ball chains, chokers and platform sneakers! The alternating caps quotes around each picture gave the catalog a personal, school notebook sort of vibe. Check out our inspired pics below! :)

80s BRAND NAMES!

Back before fast fashion brands ruled the world, it was all about brand names. The Limited was responsible for many of the greatest brand names from the 80s: Victoria's Secret, Limited Too, Structure, Forenza and Express to name a few! We put together some outfits with vintage Forenza and Express below. Although ESPRIT was it's own entity, we've included a look a little bit about that similar, iconic line as well! 

THE LIMITED

 

During the 80s, The Limited went through a massive expansion which spawned many of today's most popular brands. In 1980, the first Limited Express store opened at Water Tower Place in downtown Chicago, which focused on trendy, fashion conscious women and teenagers. (It still does today!) Forenza was a private label owned by The Limited, which also produced comfortable and trendy clothing for women. Prices varied depending on markets, making The Limited a large profit-- enough to acquire several other brands in the 80s as well! These brand were known for being high-quality and trendsetting. 

ESPRIT

ESPRIT first got popularized in the 80s when Ettore Sottsass developed the ESPRIT headquarters in Germany in a complete Memphis Design concept. This iconic theme has never left the brand, and pieces from this time period go from fun, casual sportswear to comfy urban street wear.

X-GIRL!

In 1993, Sonic Youth lead singer/bassist Kim Gordon started a clothing line with stylist Daisy von Furth called X-Girl-- a name that references a then street wear company for boys called X-Large. The company started in LA and was known for fitted graphic tees, A-line dresses and mini skirts. The style feels very Godard-era actress meets skater, which was a drastically different style for the time. Other key elements for this brand: large sunglasses and barrettes- pretty minimal accessories. Take a look at some X-girl inspired outfits below and in our ONLINE SHOP

60s Meets 90s Mod

As a subculture, mod is best known for it's fashion and music. Predominately in the 1960s and 70s, as well as a 90s revival, mod styling is remembered as a hyper cool, strong pop art aesthetic with lots of angles and shapes. Mini skirts, gogo boots, flowers, stripes, checkerboard, angled hair, roundish or cat eye sunglasses- these are all staples of this style. Check out some outfits we put together below!

MATCHING!

The 80s and 90s were all about overly matching. Take corny 80s family portraits for instance- every family member matched from head-to-toe. Now think in the 90s, when boy bands and girl bands coordinated full stage outfits. I, personally, could never forget the fashion statements TLC, Destiny's Child, Backstreet Boys and NSYNC used to make at award shows. Now, here's some outfits made to match perfectly, meeting somewhere in between all these styles using fashion's current obsession: tan and nude.

DEEE LOVELY: Psychedelic Revival

The iconic group Deee-Lite was not only known for their eclectic house music, but also for their outlandish style that spanned over several decades. Their 60s-meets-70s-meets-90s approach helped to make them one of the most easily recognizable groups; I mean who could forget those Fluevogs?

Below are some outfits put together out of select Kokorokoko pieces inspired by the style of Deee-Lite, Lady Miss Kier, DJ Towa Tei and DJ Dmitri. A strong focus was put on psychadelic horizontal stripes, bright, mismatching colors and over sized 70s sunglasses. Key brands here: John Fluevog, Serious, JNCO, Fubu and Marina Fini jewelry.
