The Max is NOW OPEN in Wicker Park! This Saved By The Bell-inspired pop-up diner and bar has been reconstructed to look exactly like the original. Kokorokoko is the official outfitter bringing all the hot vintage finds from the 80s and 90s ! Pretty gnarly right? 

The Max is open daily and has a variety of events and surprises from June through August!

OP ART!

One of our favorite patterns to stock at Kokorokoko is op art! This psychedelic style has been around since the 60s and gives the impression of movement, flashing, swelling or warping.

These designs evoke Rorschach ink blot drawings and speak to the subconscious mind to create a sense of disequilibrium. In our examples, the two items on the far right demonstrate how during the 80s, some op art designs were used for more high-brow fashion silhouettes. In the 90s, this style was used in more of a raver context. Jean-Paul Gaultier is the best example of the combination of both of these ideas: intellectual club kid style, in his 90s collections using the "droid" print below.

I.O.U.

     

I.O.U. was a preppy status symbol of the late 80s, early 90s. Though it didn't last long as a company, this brand, sold through Merry-Go-Round from 1989-1992, was a must have for every teenager in high school. This collegiate style gave people a more mature or smart vibe with words like "Premier", "Legendary", "Limited Edition", "First" arched across the front in extra large colorful fonts. These look best over-sized and paired with leggings or shorts! Keep an eye out at our shop and on Etsy as we're always stocking these super comfy statement pieces!

Going postal for mini backpacks

Mini backpacks were the go-to purse in the 90s. Leading brands like Prada and Adidas pioneered this style early on, and the cool girl in every movie always had one. (Think Clueless, Spice World, Moesha, etc) They're hard to keep in stock at Kokorokoko, but we are always on the hunt! Check out some unique styles we have below- and thanks to our associate Amina for posing outside our shop!

Purple Moon Mini Backpack $28

One bag in particular that we currently have in stock has a cool story behind it! Purple Moon was a video game company in the 90s that focused on encouraging girls friendship and decision making. This game came out during a girl games movement when video games were aimed primarily at boys. How cool that this helped pave the way for all genders to enjoy games! In 1999, this company was bought out by Mattel.

New York Facination

New York in the 80s has always been a point of reference here at Kokorokoko. We're always stocking up on cool graphic tees, tops and hats! Check out the amazing red sleeveless sweatshirt with the rose detail below as well as the shimmery gold skyline tee with comedy/tragedy masks!

I think my favorite part about visiting New York is definitely taking some souvenirs back with me! These items are a cool way to remember that one time you partied there, lost your wallet and your phone and all you got was a lousy t-shirt.

THE VERSACE EFFECT

Versace and the supermodels that wore these extravagant designs were the pinnacle of fashion in the 80s and 90s. Silk all over print blouses, leather, gold-- these are all regal staples of haute couture during this time. These designs took risk and were over-the-top and elegant-- combing prints and colors, bright with bold. More is more!

 

This look was adopted by the daring, including Fran Drescher in her iconic show The Nanny. Best known for fashion with a sense of humor, Fran always came out on set with an outfit that made you wonder what she was even thinking! But, looking back, Fran looks pretty on point with the trends today.
