OP ART!

One of our favorite patterns to stock at Kokorokoko is op art! This psychedelic style has been around since the 60s and gives the impression of movement, flashing, swelling or warping.

These designs evoke Rorschach ink blot drawings and speak to the subconscious mind to create a sense of disequilibrium. In our examples, the two items on the far right demonstrate how during the 80s, some op art designs were used for more high-brow fashion silhouettes. In the 90s, this style was used in more of a raver context. Jean-Paul Gaultier is the best example of the combination of both of these ideas: intellectual club kid style, in his 90s collections using the "droid" print below.

Check out these patterns!

We have these items and more being added every day!

MEMPHIS PRINTS!

Memphis design comes from a short period of time in the 1980s when designer Ettore Sottsass was producing what has been described as "a shotgun wedding between Bauhaus and Fischer-Price." These bold, iconic prints still seem fresh today. Below are some prints from around Kokorokoko that are very Memphis-inspired.

And below, we have our new employee Alisa modeling a few of the pieces!

Goin' back to Memphis

It's no secret we love the Memphis Milano design movement from the early 1980s at Kokorokoko. When we relocated our shop the textile patterns of Natalie du Pasquier were a huge influence on our custom paint job and we are always on the look out for the post modern geometric patterns that are her trade mark.

Every few months we feature an artist and show their art work in the shop. Our first artist at our new location is local illustrator and print maker Clay Hickson who created two custom silkscreens for our front windows as well as filled our gallery area with framed prints.

We  even have Memphis inspired jewelry! Check out our online shop for more one of a kind vintage finds from the 80s!
